A man who racially abused a fellow passenger on the Metropolitan Line has been fined £2000, the Watford Observer reports.
Jonathan O’Shea, 29, an accounts manager from Rickmansworth, made racist remarks during rush hour last July. His victim, a 32 year old woman from Peckham, took a photo of O’Shea with her mobile phone, which transport police used to identify him with the Tube’s CCTV network.
O’Shea denied the charge of racially aggravated harassment but was found guilty at Hammersmith Magistrate’s court last week. He was ordered to pay a £2000, as well as £500 in compensation, £650 in costs and the standard £15 victim surcharge levied on all fines. The exact nature of O’Shea’s remarks has not been released.
This is not the only racist incident on the London Underground in recent months. In January a woman was filmed insulting a teenager on the Northern Line, calling him a “smelly Nigerian” among other insults. The teenager had to be restrained from punching the woman in response.
